Men’s singles badminton player, Alwi Farhan, was selected to be included in the Thomas Cup Indonesia squad for the 2024 Thomas Cup which will be held in Chengdu, China, 27 April – 5 May.
As mentioned, Alwi will be the fourth single after Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, Jonatan Christie and Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo.
“First, thank God for being able to join Thomas’ team. Of course, proud and calm, excited, to be part of the team,” said Alwi to the media, including BolaSport.com.
“But, again, I am focusing on preparing myself in terms of training and mentality because this is a team tournament. And I will be fourth singles and I will definitely prepare more mentally,” said the 2023 World Junior Champion.
“Being the sole decider. Again, maybe there are a lot of dirty thoughts that make us think badly. While we think positively about appearing as the deciding party, there is our own motivation.”
The results at the 2024 Asian Championships with Jonatan Christie winning the title have made the men’s singles sector one of the mainstays of the 2024 Thomas Cup.
Alwi said that he took lessons from the success of the men’s singles at the 2024 Asian Championships.
“Men’s singles are on the rise again after the Asian Championships. I am also happy and proud of the achievements of Koh Jojo, A’ Ginting and Chico,” said Alwi.
“That was the result of hard work from the men’s singles team. I was happy and felt motivated. After having a clear example of winning the title, I became more motivated in terms of training. So to add to that we often chat and share.”
The 18 year old player said that the Indonesian men’s singles head coach, Irwansyah, gave advice so that Alwi could prepare well for the team tournament.
“I don’t know yet about the chat from Aboy (his nickname, Irwansyahk). I don’t know yet about Aboy and the coach. Just prepare yourself, not only ready in the team, but also ready when you are deployed, ready for the deciding (match),” said Alwi .
Since becoming Junior World Champion, Alwi has been demoted to senior level and has tried out the Super 300 tournament.
“The Super 300 level tournament is different from the challenge, many players are Tamil with levs from the Super 500 tournament. In this tournament there are many mature players, so you have to be more prepared mentally, physically and mentally,” admitted Alwi.
“There are many things that need to be improved because we have to meet experienced players. Young players can still read their game.”
The Indonesian Thomas Cup team is in the same group as England, Thailand and India. India is the defending champion in the 2022 Thomas Cup.
“For potential opponents in the group, if you look at the Thai players, I have already looked after who will play in third singles. That is an illustration for me,” said Alwi.
Alwi, who was expressive when acting on the field, explained that he did it to reduce the burden.
“If I’m too quiet, I won’t be able to play the game, I have to be calmer so that the opponent doesn’t read the game,” said Alwi.
